Arts & Entertainment Stage Technician Level 2

This is a position for an individual with previous entertainment stage management and technical experience. Working with other technical staff and reporting to the Entertainment Manager, this individual will assist in coordinating and supporting entertainment activities at The Butchart Gardens by making pre-show preparations, loading in performers and their equipment, looking after the performance and hospitality needs of the performers, and assisting with the technical aspects of the performances as required. This position requires some knowledge of stage lighting and the ideal candidate would possess a theatrical lighting background. This position is also involved with assisting in the technical needs of the weekly summer fireworks show on Saturday nights. The successful candidate will work within the Entertainment department and with other Gardens staff, and requires excellent communication skills, substantial initiative, and the ability to make decisions. As some heavy lifting will be required, suitable physical fitness is a necessity. The workday will primarily be afternoons and evenings, Tuesday through Saturday, with occasional long days. Work days and hours will ultimately be determined by the requirements of the Entertainment program. The successful candidate will be required to: • Ensure all the performers’ technical needs are met, and communicate those needs to other staff if required • Assist with the load in, set up, and strike of performer’s equipment and stage equipment • Look after the needs of the performers and other hospitality aspects as required • Assist with setting up theatrical equipment as required • Ensure performances start on time • Act as emcee and introduce the show to the audience if requested • Operate the lighting console. Contribute to extra show lighting as able and time permitting • If requested, ensure audience counts are collected and recorded • Update Entertainment Manager on status of performances • Ensure maintenance of venues and equipment • Assist the Fireworks department or other department areas as required • Assist with the organization, set-up, maintenance and cleaning of work areas • Abide by the company appearance policy and uniform code The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications: • Stage management experience and the ability to work with performers and technical staff • Ability to deal diplomatically with entertainers, audience, and other staff • Excellent written and verbal communication skills • Knowledgeable of current entertainment industry practices • Ability to work unsupervised and to apply creative judgement • Good organizational and troubleshooting skills • A genuine desire to be a team player • Working knowledge of audio, lighting, stage carpentry, as well as common computer programs (Word, Excel) • Good physical condition and the ability to lift and move equipment. • Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions • Flexibility in scheduling of hours • Ability to safely operate hand tools and power tools • Valid BC Driver’s License and reliable transportation This is a seasonal position, offering 40 hours per week from June 17 until Labour Day, 2024. Weekend and evening work will be required. Starting from $25.34 per hour. Remuneration will be commensurate with this level of responsibility and the qualifications of the successful candidate.
